Investing in a high-efficiency home heating/air conditioning system involves more than just what you pay for it. A good, energy-efficient system will affect your monthly bills for the life of the system. These cost savings can really add up, as your heating and air conditioning add up to more than 40% of your energy bills annually.
How to Tell
To make sure the system you’re considering is as energy efficient as possible, look for high percentages in the following:

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) A measurement of oil- or gas-burning efficiency.

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ration (SEER) A measurement of electrical efficiency in cooling with an air conditioner or heat pump.

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) A measurement of electrical efficiency in heating with a heat pump.

What this Means

If you currently spend $100 a month to heat or cool your home, you would spend just $48 if you bought a system with a SEER rating of 52%.

Easy Paths to Energy Savings
Maintain the proper humidity.
The optimal humidity level in a home falls between 40 and 60%. The higher the humidity you maintain during the heat of the summer, the less you will have to cool your home. Avoid waste.
