Investing in a high-efficiency home heating/air conditioning system involves more than just what you pay for it. A good, energy-efficient system will affect your monthly bills for the life of the system. These cost savings can really add up, as your heating and air conditioning add up to more than 40% of your energy bills annually.
How to Tell
To make sure the system you’re considering is as energy efficient as possible, look for high percentages in the following:
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) A measurement of oil- or gas-burning efficiency.
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ration (SEER) A measurement of electrical efficiency in cooling with an air conditioner or heat pump.
Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) A measurement of electrical efficiency in heating with a heat pump.
ENERGY STAR® A program launched by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This logo denotes that the product meets high standards of efficiency. This logo denotes that the product meets high standards of efficiency.
What this Means
If you currently spend $100 a month to heat or cool your home, you would spend just $48 if you bought a system with a SEER rating of 52%.
If you currently spend $100 a month to heat or cool your home, you would spend just $71 if you bought a system with an HSPF rating of 29%.
If you currently spend $100 a month to heat or cool your home, you would spend just $77 if you bought a system with an HSPF rating of 23%.
Easy Paths to Energy Savings
Avoid waste.
No need to heat or cool rooms that aren’t used. Zoning or programmable thermostats will accommodate your routine by lowering heating/cooling when you’re not home or in rooms that are not occupied.
Maintain your equipment.
An ultraviolet germicidal light, along with an air purifier or air cleaner, will keep your system performing at its best. And don’t forget regularly scheduled maintenance!
